Century City Cancelled
April 1, 2004
LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- CBS has pulled the plug on midseason drama Century City after four airings.
The series, revolving around a high-end Los Angeles law firm in the year 2030, had little ratings traction in the Tuesday 9 p.m. slot, where it went up against Fox's American Idol. In its final, March 30 screening, it was fourth for the hour with an average of 7.7 million viewers.
The ensemble cast included Viola Davis, Nestor Carbonell, Hector Elizondo and Eric Schaeffer.
It was created by veteran Law & Order scribe Ed Zuckerman, who executive produced with Oscar-nominated Quiz Show writer Paul Attanasio and Attanasio's wife, Katie Jacobs.
CBS will fill the void from next week with The Guardian, which had held down the Tuesday 9 p.m. slot until it was benched to make room for Century City.

Rescue for
Andrea Roth
March 23, 2004
From
The Hollywood Reporter: Andrea Roth (Debbie Olsen, 'Saint Debbie')
has been cast opposite Denis Leary in F/X’s Rescue Me, a drama
with comedic elements about the lives of a crew of firefighters in a New
York City firehouse. The series, created by Denis Leary and Peter Tolan
and produced by Sony Picture Television, has received a 13-episode
order, and centers on Tommy Gavin (Leary), a fireman trying to conceal
his fear of his job post-Sept. 11.
According to Leary,
Rescue Me will weave humor into the inherent drama that firefighters
face every day. "There is a lot of humor in the fire department. Even
after 9-11, these guys get by with their sense of humor," Leary said. "I
thought it was an interesting dynamic to have to deal with that amount
of grief and that [post-Sept. 11] circumstance and at the same time go
to work every day and fight fires going in there with the sensibility
that it could be your last day at work."
The series'
subject matter is
a personal one for Leary, who lost his first cousin and a childhood
friend to a warehouse fire in his hometown of Worcester, Mass. The
Rescue Me characters are based on Leary's friends, a crew of
firefighters working in a Manhattan firehouse. Leary's Firefighters
Foundation, founded in 2000, has distributed more than $1 million to
local fire departments and also raised and distributed $1.8 million to
the families of firefighters who died Sept. 11, 2001, in New York.
Rescue Me is
scheduled to begin production next month in New York and is F/X's third
drama series, following The Shield and Nip/Tuck. Andrea
Roth also appeared in the F/X series Lucky and was most recently
seen in the feature film Highwaymen with Jim James Caviezel (The
Passion of The Christ).

Hector Elizondo on Century City
March 18, 2004
Described
as a cross between L.A. Law, The Jetsons, and The
West Wing, the futuristic legal drama Century City
premiered Tuesday night, March 16, on CBS, and it turns out it’s a
pretty smart show. The series stars Miracles’ own Hector
Elizondo, who plays Marty Constable, the elder statesmen law partner
for the firm Crane, Constable, McNeil and Montero. Set in 2030,
Century City explores social issues that our society is just now
beginning to tackle and how these issues affect the law in a future
where these issues have become a reality.
Advance reviews of Century City have
been very good, but will it survive? "The show will be a success if
people are disturbed enough (by it) to talk about it around the water
cooler," says Elizondo. “It has the smell of success," he says. "But who
knows? I'm the guy who said 'Pretty Woman' would never do anything."
Century City debuted in second place on Tuesday, facing severe
competition from FOX’s Americal Idol, which claimed the No. 1
spot for the hour. And CBS already has viewers guessing with the show's
second episode set to air on Saturday, March 20, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern,
before returning to its regular Tuesday night timeslot on Tuesday, March
23.
So, what does the year 2030 look like?
Advances in technology are evident with Century City's paper-thin
computer screens and hologram images zapping into rooms for virtual
meetings. Other projections, such as demographic changes in California,
reveal a world that does not have a white majority. Elizondo suggested
to the producers that he and co-star Carbonell speak Spanish in some
scenes, with English subtitles, to provider better representation of a
2030 California. But some things never change, “…what people fight over,
what they go to court over, and what people want out of life," says Paul
Attanasio, show creator and an executive producer. "That hasn't changed
since Hammurabi."

UPDATE: Chris Marquette Promoted to Series Regular on Joan of Arcadia
February 29, 2004
As reported by TV Guide Online: "Here's proof that God is a hopeless romantic: Chris Marquette — who recurs as Amber Tamblyn's sometime lab partner/love interest, Adam, on CBS' heavenly drama, Joan of Arcadia — has been promoted to a full-fledged series regular. Word is the man upstairs has big plans for these two. Now, if only he would ditch those lame crime subplots..."

Angel Cancelled February 13, 2004
Sadly, yet another quality television show falls victim to the networks. The WB has announced
Friday that this season will be the last for Angel. The critically acclaimed series created by Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt
( Miracles) has entertained fans for five amazing years and will end its run this season.
Angel stars
David Boreanaz, Alexis Denisof, J. August Richards, Amy Acker, Andy Hallett, and James Marsters.
In an interview with to Zap2it.com, David Greenwalt states, "It's official enough to know it's real, but I haven't talked to anybody at the network or the studio. I can tell you that it's real, that it makes Mr. Whedon and myself very sad, that we wish it had kept going and we thought it was only getting better."
A press release issued by the WB confirmed the worst, "Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including
Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB."
Although the news has not yet to spread fully due to typical slow
weekend updates by many news sources, Angel fans are
already on the move, having started an
online petition to The WB and discussing options for
petitioning other networks to pick up the series. Meanwhile, Joss
Whedon posted this message to fans
at The Bronze
Beta (end of page).

UPDATE: Century City Premiere Date February 4, 2004
CENTURY CITY, a provocative legal drama, which stars Miracles alum Hector Elizondo, will premiere on Tuesday, March 16 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Nestor Carbonell, Viola Davis, Ioan Gruffudd, Kristin Lehman and Eric Schaeffer also star in this futuristic drama, set in the year 2030, where lawyers at the firm of Crane, Constable, McNeil and Montero find that the laws change but that people remain the same.
In a time when judges can go before lawyers as holograms, the firm takes on such morally and ethically ambiguous cases as parents suing their doctor for withholding critical results of their unborn child's genetic mapping, and a man accused of robbery when he steals back his identity from his ex-fiancé who has uploaded his presence onto all of her electronics. As this diverse group of attorneys find themselves in uncharted legal territory, their cases provide an eye-opening look into issues confronting society in the not-so-distant future.
